Palmes D'or Rose 2002 - Champagne, France

Dark pink salmon in the glass. The nose took a little time to unwind but within a minute headed for charcuterie aromas, Asian spice and raspberry sorbet. This certainly carries the weight and class of a top Vintage Champagne Rose.  Long and full finish with everything in place. Very hard to fault in any aspect and what a wine to start a meal. A$250/bottle

David Franz Nicole Sparkling Cabernet Shiraz NV - South Australia Unspecified, Australia

Dark deep purple with striking inky blue edges. This wine looks quite simply seductive when poured out, colour and effervescence. Very complex nose, varieties clearly on show which is not always the case with Sparkling red. Mint, roast meats, salted plum and shaved wood. The palate has great aged character and once again, clearly defined varietal flavour. Ripeness and weight in the middle followed by persistence of flavour right to the acid balanced finish. Within the top Sparkling red wines I have tried to date. A$90/bottle

The cork pulled out perfectly and colour was wonderful but unfortunately the wine was badly oxidised.

A further tasting bottle will be arranged.

De Bortoli Sauternes 1982 - Region Unknown, Australia

Followers note: This wine was renamed Noble One once the descriptor Sauternes was removed from labelling.

Dark brown copper colour. Upon checking the appearance of this wine, in bottle, I assumed an oxidised example was to be poured but proven very wrong. The nose was impeccably fresh with apricot, nougat and some cheese/milky aromas. The palate remains very well balanced with gentle sweetness and texture. A citrus burst on the finish brings home my opinion that this remains Australia's best example of this tribute to great Sauternes. A$35/bottle 375ml (Current Vintage Release Price)

Moss Wood Chardonnay 2008 - Margaret River, Australia

Deep golden yellow in the glass. Super pungent nose of tropical fruits, cinnamon and classy oak. This is a wonderfully rich Chardonnay, right at the full bodied end of the spectrum. Very fruit driven up front but minerality and balancing acidity exist way down the back of this incredibly long finish. Such a powerhouse but also very enjoyable. There is further ageing capabilities here but I don't see any point. The palate is fully mature already. A$70/bottle

Martinborough Vineyard Pinot Noir 2006 - Martinborough, New Zealand

Strikingly youthful with vibrant colour of purple and violet. The nose has everything happening including maraschino cherry, dried porcini mushroom and a host of wild fruits. Alcohol is tipping the scales just below 14% but there is no question of balance in this wine. The texture is wonderfully rich and even syrupy with weight. Flavours are abundant with forest fruits and interesting spices. This Pinot is currently soaring with 10 years of good ageing ahead. A$100/bottle

Poggiotondo Vermentino 2010 - Tuscany, Italy

Pale gold/yellow. The nose has some nice candle wax, nashi pear and lemon rind. Generally speaking this Vermentino comes across a little richer than other examples at the price, due to some oak use in fermentation. It works very well as the acidity is still lemony and fresh. A very nice summer white. A$30/bottle

RK Chardonnay 2010 - Beechworth, Australia

Quite golden/yellow in the glass for a young Chardonnay. Aromas start off with smokey, barrel ferment notes. After time in glass more tropical fruits are revealed including melon and peach. The palate is medium to full bodied with great texture and wonderfully balanced crisp acidity. This is a great cellaring option for 6-10 years. A$60/bottle

Marchand & Burch Gevrey-Chambertin 2008 - Burgundy, France

Very light rose colour with perfect clarity. The nose commences with sweet cherry with clove spicing and some damp soil. The palate is still very young with the tannin and acid drying the back end. In years ahead the balance may come back and this will earn a much higher score. A$100/bottle

Dandelion Vineyards Lionheart of the Barossa Shiraz 2009 - Barossa Valley, Australia

Ruby red in the glass. Not as dark and inky as Barossa can exhibit. The nose is perfumed and elegant with minty aromas backed by sweet roasted coffee. The palate comes together well with typical earthy, meaty Barossa flavours but is held tightly together with acid. A restrained but wonderful Shiraz. A$24.99/bottle

Fox Creek Shiraz Grenache Mourvedre 2008 - Mclaren Vale, Australia

Dom Perignon 2002 - Champagne, France

Complex nose of fresh pastry, white peach and some light nutty-almond aromas. This Champagne is finely balanced with all flavours and components in check leading to a wonderfully long finish. Not as tightly wound as the 1996 and not is big and yeasty as the 2000 but certainly like most vintages of Dom carries a singular and spectacular identity. Cellar or drink now with many years of pleasure ahead. A$220/bottle

Abel's Tempest Pinot Noir 2010 - Tasmania, Australia

A pretty nose of overripe cherry, Asian spice and rose petals. There is quite allot going on with this Pinot (more than expected) in a weighty and fruit driven "new world" style. Brookland Valley Verse 1 Chardonnay 2011 - Margaret River, Australia

Wine Men of Gotham Shiraz 2008 - South Australian Various, Australia

Blood red and bright purple edges. Aromas of melted chocolate, cinnamon and cherry cola. The palate is thick, sweet fleshed and full bodied with notable American Oak. Plenty of flavor and a slightly edgy (sharp) finish. I honestly don't know how a producer can make money having this on shelf at under A$7- per bottle. This is a marker of how good we have it with wine prices in Australia currently. A$7/bottle.

Teusner Albert Shiraz 2006 - Barossa Valley, Australia

There is no colour development from primary deep dark inky black. Aromas come in layers, including blueberry, french vanilla and earth. This Shiraz has great intensity and concentration but remains elegant and composed. Such purity and a wonderful example of the regions best up and comers. Drinking very well now but at least another 10 years of great drinking. A$60/bottle

Chateau Beychevelle 1982 - Saint-Julien, France

Smith & Hooper Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2008 - Wrattonbully, Australia

Striking colour, inky black with bright red edges. The nose is leafy with cigar smoke and mulberry. While still youthful the palate is already complex and interesting. Chris Ringland CR Shiraz 2008 - Barossa Valley, Australia

Total darkness in the glass. The nose (after 24 hours breathing) shows a sweet mint, cocoa, coconut and burnt oak. The palate is full steam ahead, no brakes with syrupy overripe black fruits, creamy acidity and earthy/dusty tannin. The texture, not surprisingly bordering on fortified wine thickness. Certainly a tipple for the lads and I don't think one could find such intensity of flavour for the price. A$25/bottle

Bright purple with an inky black core. The nose is wonderfully perfumed, almost everything one could wish for including violets, melted dark chocolate, cinnamon and red fruits. You don't think the wine can get any better than the aromas but then you taste. There is supreme intensity of flavour, length and drive. Brilliant complexity of young fruit with impeccable balance of tannin and acidity. This wine reminds of a great Hermitage from a warm year. One of the best Australian Syrah/Shiraz I have had in 2011. First Drop Mother's Milk Shiraz 2010 - Barossa Valley

Deep Purple with dark inky edges. Aromas are not to the jammy/syrupy line that was seen in the 2009, they remain more savoury with burnt coffee and aniseed. This is a testament to the great 2010 in the Barossa as concentration is excellent but still remains light on its feet. Really luscious ripe red fruits backed up by seamless oak and a structure that all falls in place. Wonderful Barossa Shiraz, not over the top at all. A$26/bottle

Eagle Vale Cabernet Merlot 2008 - Margaret River, Australia

Light ruby red in the glass. The nose shows herbal vegetal tones with tobacco and red cherry in support. The palate is soft and light up front but finishes with some bitterness and unbalanced tannin. Certainly a lighter style Bordeaux blend from Margaret River but balance and weight is not quite in check. Followers should take note, this winery is very capable of producing fine Cabernet and have done so with a number of vintages. Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc Private Bin 2010 - Marlborough, New Zealand

Very pale clear with only the slightest tinge of green.  Aromas take aim at the green spectrum with asparagus, sweet pea and green pepper. This has been, for many years what I consider a very good example in the Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc line up. Villa Maria seems to achieve a smarter balance in the sea of competition and can be relied upon for quality to value ratio. Flavours of lemongrass and guava lead into some mouth watering acidity to finish. This 2010 is still super fresh. A$18/bottle

Rolf Binder Hales Shiraz 2009 - Barossa Valley

Bright vibrant purple in the glass. Melted chocolate, dark cherry and dried spice rise from the glass. The palate is full bodied with fleshy texture and a touch of spice. The highlight of this Shiraz is the structure bringing the wine together with balanced tannin and acidity. It goes away from the expected Jammy, syrupy style we see from Barossa.

Devil's Lair The Hidden Cave Chardonnay 2011 - Magaret River, Australia

Very pale in the glass with light green tinges. The nose is surprisingly smoky with white peach and cream. On the palate, it is fresh and citrusy as expected for a young Chardonnay but has reasonable weight to finish. Not amazing value but a decent wine that wont disappoint. A$24.99

Champy (Maison) Bourgogne Chardonnay 2009 - Burgundy, France

Shiny golden yellow in the glass. The nose shows almond, bread and melon. The palate is lean as the wine is still youthful but there are an array of flavors including rock melon, cashew and citrus. The wine would benefit from an extra few years in bottle for a better balance. A$24.99/bottle

RK Shiraz 2008 - Beechworth, Australia

Deep dark purple all the way to the edges. Aromas of cocoa, sweet mint and sugar plum. The palate has great weight with syrupy texture and white pepper spice. Balance is managed with some very fine tannin and tight acid. Super rich with amazing length makes this an incredibly enjoyable Shiraz.

Followers should note the "RK" stands for Rick Kinzbrunner, the founder and winemaker of the famed Giaconda. His Chardonnay is considered Australia's best on occasion and recent years have seen some particularly good Shiraz under the Warner Vineyard label.  His wines are supremely concentrated but carry a feel of elegance and class. If you have not tried any of the Giaconda or RK wines (RK is only available at Vintage Cellars Australia) seek them out and look the other way when your AMEX is swiped through. A$60/bottle

Saint Cosme Cotes du Rhone 2009 - Rhone Valley, France

Wonderful bright purple and violet ruby. The nose exhibits clove, vanilla bean, earthy fresh picked strawberry and smoked meat. The inviting palate opens with fleshy red fruit followed by savory spice and some firm grip of tannin. The wine needs another 3-4 years for a softer look and then will hold for another 5 years after that. More weight than your average Cotes Du Rhone. A$21.99/bottle

Leo Buring Medium Sweet Riesling 2009 - Eden Valley, Australia

Pale toasty gold in the glass. The nose exhibits lychee, orange peel and candied fruit.
Sweet tropical fruit salad on the palate. There is a lack of acidity to handle the sweetness.

Readers beware: The past 2-3 years have yielded a number of new medium sweet/medium dry rieslings on the domestic Australian market. The style is set to replicate the classic Rhine Rieslings where the grape originated. Extremely pure and exposed to bitterly cold conditions on vine and during fermentation which retains natural sweetness in the wines. This makes the true Rhine style of Riesling. With these factors, specific vineyard selection is imperative to create balance between sweetness and acidity. In Australia, some fail and some succeed.

Farr Rising Chardonnay 2009 - Geelong, Australia

Bright, glowing pale yellow. A multitude of aromas leap from the glass spanning from rock-melon, nectarine into some matchstick, lees and slight smokiness. A true class act on the nose that will leave a smile on the face of Chardonnay ehnthusiastics. Built in a Montrachet mould with wonderful flavours of crushed cashew, slightly under ripe peach and some soft creamy/milky characters on the mid palate. The length is seamless with near perfect balance and the acid is tangy indicating a long life ahead but I don't see any reason to wait. This is a very fine example of Australian chardonnay. dee-ess Shiraz 2009 - Barossa Valley, Australia

Incredibly dark black with only the slightest blood red around the rim. The nose, firstly, WOW and then an exploration of smoke, pure red earth layers of exotic ripe fruits including sugar plums and a touch of white pepper. A supremely concentrated effort with masses of red fruits, espresso coffee and length that just runs and runs. Somehow all of this manages to finish with class and balance. The savoury edge that this Barossa Shiraz carries is very unique and a huge praise to the winemaking. A controlled beast!

This is made by the Standish Wine Company, Dan Standish who is part of the winemaking at Massena (Barossa) and his own label, Standish. His red wines, Shiraz and Rhone blends are all of the highest calibre and they should be chased down at all costs. $A34.99

At 9 years of age the wine is extremely approachable after decanting and shows a bright acidity that certainly will ensure longevity. Is it Australia's best Syrah? Followers that have enjoyed the 1990 and 1991 Grange should be excited by this 2002. $599/bottle.

Tua Rita Rosso di Notri (Sangiovese Blend) 2007 - Tuscany, Italy

Rose red with purple flashes. The nose leads with clove, charred oak and super ripe cherry. Medium to full bodied with spice, red fruits and a fleshy, luscious mid palate. Gentle tannins support a long finish guided by great acidity. A young wine with a strong future ahead and certainly an interesting and successful take on Sangiovese blended with Bordeaux varieties (Merlot & Cabernet Sauvignon). A$44.99/bottle
